Venture capital investment information is now available for the first nine months of 2004. According to the PriceWaterhouseCoopers MoneyTree Survey, venture capitalists invested approximately $15.3 billion during that period, compared to $13.3 billion during the first nine months of 2003. Assuming investments continue at the current pace, total investment for 2004 is expected to exceed the $18.7 billion invested in 2003.
In the third quarter of 2004, venture firms invested a total of $4.3 billion in 601 different companies. A majority of the funds invested in the quarter (approximately $2.1 billion) went to 267 expansion stage companies. A total of 181 early stage companies received $840 million. First time financings attracted a total of $1 billion million in venture capital, spread among 182 different companies, including 44 software companies and 4 networking companies. Overall, on a sector basis, biotechnology companies lead the way, with 127 companies garnering a total of $1.26 million in funding. Software companies (160 in total) attracted $942 million. The telecommunications and networking industries languished on a comparative basis, with 58 telecommunications companies receiving $450 million, and 43 networking companies raising $314 million.
