Chapter 5: Advanced Web Page Construction

Many people are drawn to the Web because of its graphics: they want to work with photographs, special effects, and animation. Others are interested in interactive Web pages: they want to add a guestbook or an opinion poll to their Web pages. In Chapter 5 we provide a taste of what can be done with image maps, JavaScript, and Java applets. We show how nonprogrammers can add existing scripts and applets to their Web pages, drawing from extensive script and applet archives for Web page developers. Some students will want to learn JavaScript or Java in order to pursue advanced Web page construction in depth. Others will be content to exploit "plug-and-play" Web page enhancements from a developer's archive. In either case, this chapter shows everyone how to get started with image flips, data-driven text displays, site mappers, and other advanced Web page features.
