Chapter 7: Joining a Virtual Community

People are social animals. We grow up in a family, we hang out with friends, and we talk to anyone who will listen. On the Internet, our social selves take on whole new personas. No longer limited to nearby neighbors and face-to-face contact, we can reach out to fellow Netizens across the country or around the world. People tend to look for others with common interests, and the Internet is one huge, never-ending college mixer (minus the bodies and the body language). Once you learn where to look, you can find entire communities of people who share some of your interests and enjoy talking about them. Chapter 7 covers mailing lists, Web-based discussion groups, Usenet newsgroups, online chat, and instant messaging.
