Checking Basic Concepts

1. Create symbolic, numerical, and graphical representations of a function f that computes the number of feet in x miles. For the numerical representation let x = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

2. Sketch the graphs of two relations—one that represents a function and one that does not represent a function. Explain your answer.

3. Find the slope of the line passing through the points (22, 4) and (4, 25). If the graph of passes through these two points, what is the value of a?

4. Identify each representation of a function f as constant, linear, or nonlinear. Support your answer graphically.

5. The table shows U.S. advertising expenditures y in billions of dollars for year x.

  1. Make a line graph of the data. Let this graph represent a function f.

  2. Compute the average rate of change of f from 1980 to 1990 and from 1990 to 1997. Interpret your results.
