Checking Basic Concepts

1. Graph using a graphing calculator.

  1. Find the domain of f.

  2. Identify any vertical or horizontal asymptotes.

  3. Sketch a graph of f that includes all asymptotes.

2. Solve .

3. Solve . Write the solution set in interval notation.

4. Solve . Write the solution set in internal notation.

5. Time Spent in Line Suppose a parking ramp attendant can wait on 4 vehicles per minute and vehicles are leaving the ramp randomly at an average rate of x vehicles per minute. Then the average time T in minutes spent waiting in line and paying the attendant is given by

where x < 4. (Source: N. Garber and L. Hoel, Traffic and Highway Engineering.)

  1. Evaluate T(2) and interpret the result.

  2. Graph T in [0,4,1] by [0,4,1].

  3. What happens to the waiting time as x increases from 0 to 4?

  4. Find x if the waiting time is 5 minutes.
