Downloading Tutorial

There are several ways to download files off of this Web site, and indeed, the Web in general. But we can break this into two different categories: downloading the document/image that you're currently looking at, and downloading from a page of links.

Downloading the document/image that you're currently looking at

To download a Web page that you are currently viewing, look up at the menu bar on the browser. Select "File" then "Save as." Be careful to keep track of where you're saving the file on your computer so you can find it again later. Go ahead and try it with this Web page for practice.

To download an image on the screen, put your mouse pointer over the image, and either press the right mouse button (on a Windows computer) or hold down the control key and then click the mouse button (on a Macintosh computer). Depending on your Web browser, you'll get one of these following messages:

  • Save picture as
  • Save this image as
  • Save image

Or perhaps an even different message if you're using an unusual browser. Click on the appropriate message, and once again, be careful to keep grack of where on your computer you're saving the file. Now practice this on the image of the book cover in the upper right corner of this page.

Downloading from a list of links

You can also download from a list of links. Here's a list of files for chapter 3:

Instead of simply clicking on the links, click the right mouse button on them (on a Windows computer) or hold down the control key and then click the mouse button (on a Macintosh computer).

Depending on your Web browser, you'll get one of these following messages:

  • Save target as
  • Save as
  • Save this link as

Or perhaps an even different message if you're using an unusual browser. Click on the appropriate message, and once again, be careful to keep track of where on your computer you're saving the file. Now practice this the links provided above.
