  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
    The CDC, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services. It is one of eight federal public health agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services. The Director of CDC also serves as the Administrator of ATSDR (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry). The CDC's mission is to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability.

  • United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
    This is the home page for the USDA, the organization that gives us the Dietary Guidelines for Americans among other nutrition-related information. The USDA’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for the American people by:
    • supporting production of agriculture.
    • Ensuring a safe, affordable, nutritious, and accessible food supply.
    • caring for agricultural, forest, and range lands.
    • supporting sound development of rural communities.
    • providing economic opportunities for farm and rural residents.
    • Expanding global markets for agricultural and forest products and services.
    • and working to reduce hunger in America and throughout the world.

  • Food and Drug Administration
    It is the FDA's job to see that the food we eat is sage and wholesome, the cosmetics we use won't hurt us, the medicines and medical devises we use are safe and effective, and that radiation-emitting products such as microwave ovens won't do us harm. Feed and drugs for pets and farm animals also come under FDA scrutiny. FDA also ensures that all of these products are labeled truthfully with the information that people need to use them properly.

  • The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s Obesity Education Initiative, "Achieve Healthy Weight!"
    This website provides information on how to lose and control weight, guidelines on treating overweight and obesity, assessment of overweight and obesity, and principles of safe and effective weight loss.
