Math Minute Discovery Questions
Math Minute Discovery Questions
This activity contains 2 questions.
Math Minute 1.1 Question 1)
On the BLASTp report from Discovery Question 10, find accession number 118685, click on "118685" , and find the protein sequence at the bottom of this page. You can see your previous query sequence beginning at position 3314. Select amino acids 3241-3420 and submit a new BLASTp query with these 180 letters (BLAST will always ignore numbers and spaces in queries, so it is fine to copy and paste the entire three lines of sequence into the query box.) While you are waiting for the hits, predict how the E-values and number of hits in this report will be different from those in your first search. Explain what happens to E-values corresponding to the exact same bit scores in the two different reports.
To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.
Math Minute 1.1 Question 2)
Perform another BLASTp search, using the same 180 amino acids as in Math Minute Discovery Question 1, but this time restricting the search to the refseq database. Read about this database by clicking the "?" next to the database dropdown list, and then clicking "more." Explain why your E-values changed again in this report. Predict what would happen to your E-value if you performed the exact same search one year later.
To create paragraphs in your essay response, type
at the beginning of the paragraph, and
at the end.
