This chapter focuses on the integumentary system. Included in Chapter 5 is a review of structure and function of the integumentary system, and how this system responds to injuries and the effects of aging. The integumentary system consists of the cutaneous membrane, (which includes the epidermis, dermis, and the accessory structures) and the subcutaneous layer, which stabilizes the skin's position against underlying organs and tissues. Review of Chapter Objectives (with page no. references to text): 1. Describe the general functions of the integumentary system. (p. 110) 2. Describe the main structural features of the epidermis and explain their functional significance. (pp. 111112) 3. Explain what accounts for individual and racial difference in skin, such as skin color. (pp. 112113) 4. Explain how the integumentary system helps regulate body temperature. (p. 113) 5. Discuss the effects of ultraviolet radiation on the skin and the role played by melanocytes. (pp. 113114) 6. Discuss the functions of the skin's accessory structures. (pp. 114118) 7.
