The demand for products that enlarge muscles, develop fit bodies, and enhance muscle definition has created a multimillion dollar industry in the United States. Most people associate weight training with muscular development. Reflecting on what you know of the physiology of muscles, what will lifting weights accomplish? Will this training benefit any system other than the muscular system? Prepare a short training program, assuming your goal is to tone your entire body without excessive muscle enlargement. Include a brief description of why each activity is included in your regime, as well as the expected results for a male and a female. 2 .		Exploration #2 (10 minutes): The largest heat producers in the body are the skeletal muscles. The heat that skeletal muscles generate as they break down ATP for both movement and maintenance of posture helps keep our core body temperature at a relatively constant 37°C (98.6°F). The muscular system can also elevate body temperature when we are cold, through the random contraction of muscle cells—shivering uses a lot of ATP and generates large amounts of heat as a result. What happens when the body temperature continues to drop despite the efforts of the muscular system? Review the paragraph on heat loss in this chapter, and then look at the discussion on dermal circulation in Chapter 5. Using this information, prepare an outline of how the systems of the body respond to rising and falling temperatures. What symptoms would you expect from someone suffering from hypothermia?
