Figure 13.1: Computer simulated image of the X-ray binary A0620-00. One member of a binary star system has collapsed to form a black hole. The remaining star is close enough that it sheds mass onto the compact object. Conservation of angular momentum organizes the mass flowing onto the compact object into an accretion disk. The disk is heated by the dissipation of orbital energy to a temperature at which it emits X-rays.
